The following is a comparison of image downloads from the 3 most popular social media today, namely Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. To get accurate results, of course, when uploading make sure to use the same image source. The cause of the image is different because each social media has its own compression system to reduce image size but still maintain quality.

Sample Download

The sample download in this post is the latest photo post from Pokimane, a Gamer / Twitch Streamer, each of which uploads a new image directly to these 3 popular social media, as well as inspiring me to make this comparison post, let’s take a sample image from the following links and try it compare one by one.

Each post above has a total of 4 images, and we will take one of them, for comparison. All the processes below are done with a desktop browser, Google Chrome on Mac OS.

How to Download

Twitter

How to download images on Twitter. Twitter provides full size images ready to download, by going to the tweet detail page, right click save image as.

Instagram

By default Instagram web does not render images with <img /> tags so users cannot download directly like on Twitter by right-clicking save as. The solution is to just inspect the element, just take the url for the full size.

Facebook

Facebook web itself, provides a download menu to download images so it’s the easiest.

Download Results Comparison

Resolution Comparison

Twitter resolution currently gets the highest resolution with the following comparison:

  • Twitter: 1440 x 1800
  • Facebook: 864 x 1080
  • Instagram: 1080 x 1350

From the resolution above, it is safe that no cropping will occur because the length and width are the same, it is different because there is a resize from each social media which has a compression system.

The image with the largest resolution is obtained by Twitter and the smallest resolution is obtained by Facebook

Size comparison

The sizes obtained are as follows:

  • Twitter: 285,861 bytes
  • Facebook: 92,325 bytes
  • Instagram: 189,783 bytes

In accordance with the resolution obtained by Twitter with the largest size and Facebook with the smallest size

Quality Comparison

For this quality comparison, I only use eyeball based on eye vision, so the results can be relative based on each person. For pictures that are compared in a row can be seen in the image above.

The picture above is when I zoom in to see the detail of the hair image, and Twitter looks more detailed, according to the larger size and resolution.

Conclusion

From the experiment above, Twitter doesn’t seem to do much compression so it can still get a bigger image resolution and bigger size. While Facebook has the smallest resolution and smallest size, this is also proportional to the quality obtained.
